Autumn rodent prevention for business premises

As temperatures fall, rats and mice look for warmth, food and a route that stays dry. Warehouses, plant rooms and staff kitchens are obvious targets. The useful work happens before droppings appear on a daily checklist: close gaps under doors, fit brush strips, keep waste lidded, and check that bait or sensor points from summer are still in the right place.

A planned programme from CSS Pest Services Limited records early signs, fixes proofing defects and keeps the audit file current. Small activity in October is far cheaper than an established colony in January. If you only do one thing this month, walk the building perimeter at dusk and note every gap a pencil could pass through. Mice need little more than that.

Drone surveys for birds and high-level defects

Scaffolding tells you a lot, and it also tells the birds you are coming. A drone survey maps nesting, roost lines, blocked gutters and damaged flashings while the building stays in use. You get stills and a recommendation: clean, proof, or book rope access for the spots a drone cannot treat.

It is especially useful on retail parks, schools and civic roofs where access equipment would close a car park for a day. The survey is a decision tool, not a substitute for the hands-on work that follows.

Pest control is a partnership, not a purchase

A recent enforcement case involving the retailer B&M, reported with a penalty in the region of £2 million, made a simple point: holding a pest control contract is not the same as being in control. Inspectors look at whether recommendations were acted on by cleaning, facilities and store teams, not only whether a technician signed the book.

We write actions with an owner and a date. If proofing is outstanding, the portal keeps it visible. Prevention remains cheaper than enforcement, and it only works when the people who unlock the building each morning are part of the plan.

Thermal imaging

Infrared cameras locate rodent heat in voids and wasp nests behind cladding, so treatment starts at the harbour rather than the symptom on the skirting.

Summer wasp nests

A nest near a doorway or play area is a sting risk. Do not block the entrance. Call for a survey, keep people clear, and let a technician treat it in one visit where possible.

How rodents get in

Broken air bricks, unprotected drains, gaps around pipes and doors left ajar at the end of a shift are the usual routes. Proof those, and most new activity stops.
